Majestic Wines to close stores and change name as part of revamp plan

Majestic Wine stores in Bristol could be closed as part of a turnaround plan to transform the company.

The UK’s biggest specialist wine chain, which has shops in Westbury-on-Trym, Arno’s Vale and Portishead, has announced plans to focus on its online subscription business Naked Wines.

Majestic will also be changing its name to Naked Wines as part of the overhaul.

The retailer has blamed tough supermarket competition and weak consumer spending on the high street.

The number of stores to be closed and job losses will be announced in June.

Chief executive, Rowan Gormley, said: "It is clear that Naked Wines has the potential for strong sustainable growth, and we will deliver the best results for our shareholders, customers, people and suppliers by focusing all our energies on delivering that potential.

"We also believe that a transformed Majestic business does have the potential to be a long-term winner, but that we risk not maximising the potential of Naked if we try to do both.

"Where we have no choice but to close stores we will aim to minimise job losses by migration into Naked.

"Therefore we have taken a decision to focus all of our capital and energies into delivering the long-term potential of Naked, and releasing value from Majestic.

"Our plans for doing this are well advanced, and we look forward to sharing the final details in June."

Bristol Asda and Sainsbury's could be sold off amid proposal to 'sell up to 150 supermarkets'

Naked Wines was founded by Mr Gormley in 2008 - and was bought by Majestic in 2015 for £70million.

A total of 45 per cent of Majestic’s business now comes from online, while 20 per cent is  international sales.

The company says profits are on track for 2019 and sales are set to hit of £500million this year.
