Maitland Public School teachers held a stopwork meeting on Thursday over staff shortages, the second Hunter school to stage industrial action this week.

NSW Teachers Federation deputy president Henry Rajendra said members were concerned at the NSW government's failure to properly staff public schools.

"Classes are being split and learning programs disrupted when casuals are unavailable because of the statewide shortage," he said.

"Maitland has been unable to cover numerous classes of absent colleagues."

The Education Department said 16 teachers had held a 15-minute stopwork meeting at 9.10am.

It said every class at Maitland had a qualified teacher and the school had no permanent vacancies.

Staff at Newcastle Senior School held a stopwork meeting on Tuesday.
