'Maitland-Niles' days numbered' - Arsenal fans react to Arteta's team selection vs West Ham

Arsenal fans believe Ainsley Maitland-Niles' future could be in the balance having not made the squad to face West Ham in the Premier League.

Hector Bellerin has been dropped to the bench and in his place, Mikel Arteta has chosen Sokratis Papastathopolous to start.

Maitland-Niles excelled early during Arteta's reign at the club as an inverted right-back but hasn't started the 1-1 draw against Sheffield United on January 18.

This will be Sokratis' fourth start in his place and he has insisted it is a role that the head coach is drilling into him.

Art de Roche reacts to Mikel Arteta's press conference

"I spoke with the manager, he knows it's not my position but sometimes we twist with the three," the defender said after beating Portsmouth 2-0 .

"It is his tactic, how he thinks.

"He explains to us every day in training and also before the training – it depends how the other team is but if you'd like to know more you can ask him because he is a professor, you know."

David Luiz will partner Pablo Mari as the centre-back pairing as Bukayo Saka remains at left-back despite Kieran Tierney returning to full training. The Scot isn't on the bench either.

Granit Xhaka will play alongside Dani Ceballos in the double-pivot with Mesut Ozil at the No.10. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will come in off the left, Nicolas Pepe on the right and Eddie Nketiah will lead the line. He has three goals in four starts.

Arsenal fans have voiced their opinions on Maitland-Niles not being in the matchday squad.

David Moyes has never won away at Arsenal but Arteta is still wary of facing his former boss for the first time as a manager.

"They caused a lot of problems to big teams recently," he said in his pre-match press conference .

"I know David because I worked with him for seven years. I know his structure, I know how organised he is. I am sure he'll put a team out there that is going to make life very difficult for us.

"They will compete, they will be physical. We need to use our resources, play our game and then just think about performing. That performance will bring the points home."
