Maitland man hit with $1000 in fines and 18 points over restraints

A MAITLAND man has been slapped with more than $1000 in fines and 18 demerit points after he was stopped for a breath test at Elermore Vale.

The 35-year-old was stopped on Monday morning as Newcastle City Highway Patrol officers conducted random breath testing on Lake Road.

Police allege the man's vehicle had three children in the back aged four, three and one who were not restrained in the correct child seats.

"The one-year-old was being restrained in a pram bassinet at the time," NSW Police said.

The man received three infringement notices, $1032 in fines and 18 demerit points.

The incident comes a day after police expressed concern after three people stopped across NSW for poor driving behaviour were found to have children in the car.

"This reckless behaviour we're seeing on our roads - particularly driving with unrestrained children in cars - is very troubling for police," Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said on Sunday.

"While, thankfully, these drivers were stopped before anyone was injured, their actions could have resulted in very serious consequences very quickly.

"To say that our officers are disappointed is an understatement. People need to realise that your choices as a driver do not just affect yourself but everyone else on the road."

The annual police road blitz began on December 20 and ends at midnight on New Year's Day.
