Maitland City Council will make a submission to the NSW Government objecting to the proposed expansion of the Martins Creek Quarry, believing it is "not in the public interest".
Quarry operator Daracon is applying to more than triple its operations to extract 1.1 million tonnes of material from the site a year, with 280 truck movements proposed per day. The planned truck route will pass through several Maitland suburbs.
A motion approved by Maitland councillors on Tuesday asked that council make a formal objection to the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment about the proposal.
"This will outline concerns over heavy vehicle movements, traffic impacts and noise," the report said. "As a result of these concerns, council does not consider the proposal to be in the public interest."
Council believes the impacts on the road network, particularly Tocal, Paterson, Flat and Pitnacree roads as well as Melbourne Street, East Maitland, had not been properly considered, nor had appropriate mitigation measures been proposed.
"This, combined with the concerns over noise impacts, through Bolwarra and Bolwarra Heights in particular, mean that there is the potential for significant impacts on the community."
