Mainz's on-loan Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi hospitalised after head injury

Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi was taken to hospital after suffering a serious-looking head injury while playing for Mainz in the Buindesliga on Sunday.

The Nigerian, 22, had to be taken off on a stretcher after a clash of heads with Augsburg defender Felix Uduokhai which resulted in nasty fall in the first half of his side's 1-0 defeat.

Medics put Awoniyi's neck in a brace as they attended to him, with the match delayed for several minutes before he left the field.

With the match taking place behind closed doors, the stadium public address system played applause for Awoniyi as he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher.

Reports from Germany claim that the forward was responsive as he was taken to hospital for tests.

Awoniyi joined Liverpool in 2015 having played in the Nigeria teams that won both the Under-17 World Cup in 2013 and the African Under-20 Championships two years later.

Having been unable to earn a work permit to play in England, the forward has departed on several loan spells in Germany, Holland and Belgium, with Mainz already the fifth club he has played for away from Anfield.

His most prolific spell came at Belgian side Mouscron last season, when he scored 11 goals in 16 games.

Augsburg's Florian Niederlechner scored the only goal of the game after just 43 seconds, with the result seeing his side move seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Mainz are just three points and one place above the drop zone after the loss, with Germany's top-flight set for a full programme of matches in midweek.

They face Borussia Dortmund in their next match on Wednesday.
