Maintenance for Rama VIII Bridge in October

Major maintenance work is planned for Rama VIII Bridge, beginning in October, Bangkok deputy governor Chakkaphan Phewngam said.

The bridge will not be closed to traffic during the repairs, he said.

The latest inspection of the cable-stayed bridge across the Chao Phraya River revealed fatigue damage to the structure, especially corrosion in the steel cables.

A budget of 140 million baht had been set aside for the work. A 3D model of the bridge will be used to increase efficiency, he said.

Rama VIII bridge has been in use since 2002 and is scheduled for repair and maintenance every 10 years.

Linking Bangkok and Thon Buri, Rama VIII bridge serves at least 20,000 vehicles each day. It joins the Boromratchonnanee elevated road, helping take the traffic load off Phra Pinklao bridge and Krung Thon bridge during rush hour.

Rama VIII bridge is one of several road projects initiated by the late king Bhumibol.

He championed the project in the mid-1990s after he witnessed the traffic congestion in the Pinklao area during regular visits to the late HRH the Princess Mother, who was then receiving treatment at Siriraj Hospital.
