Mainstay Scots hotel to close after 'challenging time' during coronavirus lockdown

A mainstay Scots hotel, bar and restaurant has announced it will not reopen after being hammered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Aberdeen's Mariner Hotel, on Great Western Road, has been ran by the Edwards family for more than 30 years.

But it closed its doors at the start of the pandemic and will now not reopen.

The city was placed in localised lockdown for three weeks after a Covid-19 spike linked to Aberdeen's nightlife.

All bars, restaurants and cafes were closed while restrictions were put on visiting people and travelling.

Yesterday we told how the Granite City's only major gay venue was closing temporarily due to a ban on music.

Bosses at Cheerz said the atmosphere had 'completely changed' since they were barred from playing tunes- but said they hoped to reopen when the policy changed.

A statement from the Edwards family at the Mariner said it had been 'an amazing journey' and that they would be joining the team

It read: "With a heavy heart we can confirm that The Mariner Hotel will not be reopening.

"The lockdown has been a challenging time for many hospitality businesses in Aberdeen - and we are no exception.

"We have had a wonderful journey over the past 30years - bringing Atlantis up to the Malacca Hotel, and making it a home from home for ourselves, our amazing staff and our locals & regulars.

"We have enjoyed being part of a lovely West End community- it’s been a privilege to be part of it.

"While it is indeed the end of an era - we are heading out to start a new adventure...joining the great team out at The Cults Hotel.

"Thanks to all for your custom, support and friendship.

"Onwards & Upwards,

"The Edwards Family"

City council leader Douglas Lumsden commented: "So sorry to hear this, I was in the bar on 20th March when lockdown was announced, never imagined that would be last time in bar.

"As a family we have spent many an evening in the mariner, all the best in the future."

While, Kim Watson wrote: "So sorry to hear this sad end of an era news. Loved my time or times working at the Mariner and met so many lovely people...loads of great memories.

"Good luck for your new adventure at the Cults. Love it there so look forward to seeing you there!"
