Maine Red Claws officially name Darren Erman as head coach

Former Boston Celtics assistant coach Darren Erman has returned, as the Maine Red Claws officially announced their hiring of Erman to be the head coach of the Celtics’ official NBA G League affiliate.

Erman’s hire was first announced in late July but had yet to be formalized. He will be the sixth head coach of the Red Claws franchise, replacing former head coach Brandon Bailey who is now an assistant coach for the Celtics.

Of the hire, Erman says “I am beyond excited to be returning to the Celtics organization to lead the Red Claws. Boston is where it all started for me, and I know all about Maine.”

Having spent the past four seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans under head coach Alvin Gentry, the defensive-minded Erman also coached under former head coach Mark Jackson with the Golden State Warriors before being fired for recording private conversations between players and coaches without their knowledge.

First hired to be an assistant coach with the Celtics in 2007 under former head coach Doc Rivers (Rivers is now the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers) thanks to his friendship with former fan favorite Brian Scalabrine, Erman returned to Boston after being fired by Golden State to be the Celtics’ director of player scouting.

Consequentially, this is Erman’s third time being employed by the Celtics, highlighting the trust and familiarity the franchise and Erman have for one another.
