Main road in Overtown closed off after roof of popular takeaway collapses

The main road in Overtown had to be closed off last Sunday afternoon after the roof of a petrol station and popular takeaway collapsed on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services attended the incident just after 1.40pm at the Spice Kitchen which is situated near the junction of Main Street and Castlehill Road.

Police moved to close off the road for a time as the building was examined by safety experts.

A local resident spotted the collapse just as police arrived at the scene.

He said: “I was passing and the police just pulled up. I looked at the roof and it had collapsed.”

Sergeant Lorna Hinshelwood, community police officer at Wishaw, said: “The takeaway is attached to a disused garage and the roof on that had started to collapse.

“The road from Gowkthrapple up to Main Street in Overtown was closed off to ensure the safety of the public.

“Building control have attended and are liaising with the owner of the building.”

The road was later reopened when it was safe to do so.
