Main road in north Manchester closed after burst water main causes 'void' underneath the surface

Drivers are being asked to avoid one of the main roads in Newton Heath after a burst water main caused the surface to become unstable.

Transport chiefs said a 'void' had opened up beneath the surface on Culcheth Lane, following a leak on Monday (August 9).

United Utilities (UU) said the pipe has now been repaired and that work on the road surface should be finished by Thursday.

Pictures from the scene today (Tuesday) show a hole in the road, which has been fenced off.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said earlier this morning that the road was closed between the junctions with Frank Birchill Close and Ballantine Street.

This was due to 'a void appearing beneath the carriageway caused by a water burst'.

"Please use an alternative route and allow extra time for your journey," bosses added.

Diamond Bus company said the 171 and 172 services are being diverted in both directions, down Terence Street, Droylsden Road, Graver Lane and Berry Brow.

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Our engineers attended a burst water main on Culcheth Road yesterday.

"It has now been repaired and we expect to have restored the road and cleared the site by Thursday.

"Traffic management is in place and we apologise for any inconvenience caused by the repair works.”
