Main road in city centre cordoned off after attack which left victim with injuries

Police closed one of Manchester city centre's main roads following an attack which left a victim with injuries.

Oldham Street was cordoned off by police on Saturday afternoon following an incident at nearby Piccadilly Gardens.

Pictures from the scene showed what appeared to be blood-soaked garments on the pavement.

Police patrols have been stepped up and an investigation is underway.

Greater Manchester Police has updated local councillors about the incident.

An email to local representatives said: "At approximately 15.45 hours this afternoon police officers responded to an incident in Piccadilly Gardens whereby the victim received injuries.

"Enquiries are currently ongoing but it is believed that this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the wider public.

"High visibility patrols will be offering reassurance in the area."

Stagecoach had to divert some of its services because of the road closure.

The M.E.N. revealed last month that a new team of police officers has been tasked with cleaning up Piccadilly Gardens once and for all.

For years, Manchester city centre's biggest and most visited public square has been plagued by crime.

Operation Perseus launched in December and there are now two shifts of police officers - five Pcs and four Pcsos - covering Piccadilly seven days a week.

With the relaxation of coronavirus restrictions, Manchester city centre has become much busier with shoppers and people enjoying food and drink outdoors.

Greater Manchester Police has been asked for a comment about the latest incident.
