Main road closed as firefighters battle blaze in derelict pub

A main road in Salford is closed as fire crews battle a blaze in a derelict pub.

Around 25 firefighters rushed to the scene on Liverpool Road in Irlam.

Crews were called at about 4pm on Saturday to reports of a fire in the old Railway pub.

Police and paramedics are also at the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 4pm this evening five fire engines from Eccles, Irlam, Birchwood, Lymm and Salford Central fire stations along with a Hydraulic Platform from Leigh were called to reports of a building fire involving a derelict pub on Liverpool Road, Irlam.

"Crews arrived quickly at the scene.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses and using two main jets and a hose reel are working to extinguish the fire and make the area safe. “

"Firefighters have been in attendance for around two hours and are still at the scene."

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area if possible.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted: "ROAD CLOSED

"B5230 Liverpool Road is closed between Clarendon Road and Astley Road.

"This is due to GM Fire Rescue Service attending an incident.

"Please divert via the A57 if possible.

"Local bus services are on diversion."
