Main road closed as fire crews battle house blaze

A main road in Leigh has been closed while firefighters battle a house fire.

Crews were called at around 4pm to Firs Lane after a blaze broke out in the kitchen of a terraced home near the junction with Wigan Road and Twist Lane.

Fire engines from Leigh, Atherton and Hindley stations were at the scene.

An ambulance was also called to the area but nobody is believed to have been injured in the blaze.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "At 4.08pm on Tuesday, March 30, firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a house on Firs Lane, in Leigh.

"Fire engines from Atherton, Leigh and Hindley quickly attended the scene. The fire involves the kitchen of a terraced housed.

"Firefighters are using breathing apparatus and hose reels to extinguish the fire and remain at the scene."

The closure created long delays in Leigh, with queues from the Wigan Road junction to Atherleigh Way.

The incident also caused slow moving traffic along Atherleigh Way as far as the East Lancs Road.

Drivers in Leigh have suffered from further delays after St Helens Road was closed due to a crash earlier in the day.
