Piers Morgan has signed a two-year contract to continue writing for MailOnline just weeks after the website announced the arrival of the controversial ex-Sun columnist Katie Hopkins.

The former Daily Mirror editor, who is poised to do more regular presenting work for ITV’s Good Morning Britain, will continue as the Mail’s US editor-at-large.

Morgan, who joined Mail Online’s US-facing site DailyMail.com after his chatshow was axed by CNN, said he was delighted. “It’s been an exhilarating experience to see my columns debated on social media from Baltimore to Beijing, often attracting a bigger audience than I enjoyed at CNN,” he said.

“I look forward to two more years of stimulating debate over issues as diverse as the US presidential election and the Syrian war, to Cecil the Lion and Kim Kardashian’s torso.”

He was quick to tell his 4.6 million Twitter followers about the news, boasting that a recent column on Isis got more than 2m page views.

Martin Clarke, editor-in-chief of MailOnline, said: “Piers has been an excellent asset for DailyMail.com. His column is widely read by millions of our readers and frequently shared tens of thousands of times via social media.”

“He’s not afraid to push the envelope and he always has a unique view that our readers want to hear – even the ones that don’t agree what he has to say will read his column and share their opinion.”
