The Mail on Sunday is reported to have sold more than 2.8m copies due to its giveaway of a Prince CD on Sunday. With an average sale last month of 2.27m, it amounts to an increase of almost a third and was its biggest circulation uplift since the death of Princess Diana. According to today's Guardian story, the paper's gambit is believed to have cost nearly £1m. But was it a good idea? Philip Stone offers his thoughts.
