Maid accused of stealing from Sir Mo Farah opens up on ordeal

A chambermaid who was jailed after being accused of stealing from Sir Mo Farah has insisted she has never stolen in her life.

There has been an extraordinary build-up to this year's London Marathon, which has seen Olympic hero Farah involved in a furious row with Haile Gebrselassie.

The pair publicly swap accusations about events at the Ethiopian's hotel, with Farah complaining to police that money and personal items had gone from his room.

Abebech Gradisa, 23, spent 16 days in a cell after coming under suspicion as she had serviced his room, but has reiterated her innocence.

She said: “There was no evidence against me. I had serviced his room for two months and he would leave his laptop and money out and I would always put it on the table for him.

“I have never stolen anything and I have worked at the hotel for eight months without any complaint against me.”

The single mum, who has a three-year-old daughter, was among several staff from the Yaya Africa Athletics Village in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, taken into custody.

Ms Gradisa, who earns £50 a month, was freed on £80 bail and had to raise the funds from her family.

She was caught up in a bitter row between Sir Mo and fellow Olympic legend Haile Gebrselassie, who owns the hotel.

Farah had claimed Gebrselassie failed to give his full attention to the alleged theft, saying: "Hotel staff were dismissive and I had to force the police to investigate.”
