LUCKNOW: In sync with the theme for this year’s World Wetland Day, which is ‘Conserving Nature, Preserving Heritage’, the state government has identified Mahoba’s Vijay Sagar bird sanctuary for the three-day bird festival.
The three-day fest will start on February 1. The event will coincide with the World Wetland Day celebrated on February 2 every year.
A government official said, the sanctuary has Vijay Sagar lake that was built by Chandela King, Vijay Pal Chandela, in the 11th century. It is spread over 262 hectares and is visited by about 200 species of migratory and winter birds every year between November and February.
“The sanctuary has a lake and surrounding forest area. It is a gateway to Bundelkhand,” the official said.
The lake is a few kilometers from the seven lakes of Charkhari town in Mahoba district, which were also constructed by the erstwhile kingdoms in the region for water conservation.
The organisation of the bird festival at Vijay Sagar bird sanctuary will promote ecotourism at the place that has hilly terrain of Kaimur ranges, forts of Bundelkhand and natural locales as other attractions.
The previous bird festivals have been held at the National Chambal Sanctuary, Dudhwa National Park and Ramgarh Taal in Gorakhpur. Bird watching activities will be held at every wetland in the state as a part of the event.
