Mahmoud Jibril: Libyan Crisis Can Only Be Solved by Inclusion of all Parties

Mahmoud Jibril, the head of the Libyan National Forces Alliance, said that any solution to his country’s crisis must include all the political components.

In an interview with the German press agency on Thursday, Jibril said: “We do not support any side at the expense of the other... but we call on the parties to the conflict to ask themselves why regional forces and western countries are rushing to support them.”

“What is happening now is a proxy war between these powers and nations... They are fighting for their interests in our country,” he added.

Jibril said he feared any escalation would turn it into a “direct armed confrontation between those forces on our territory, and then we will not be far from the scenario of partition, and we will lose Libya as a homeland.”

The Libyan National Forces Alliance, has recently launched, in partnership with other political forces and national figures, an initiative aimed at stopping the current fighting in Tripoli and resuming the political process.

The initiative proposes several steps, starting with the creation of a buffer zone in the fighting areas in Tripoli and the holding of a national forum in which a comprehensive document will be adopted, paving the way for the elections.

Jibril noted that the contradictions of European positions - particularly the positions of countries with direct influence on both sides of the conflict, such as France, Italy, Britain and others - over the initiative of his alliance, strengthened his conviction that there were those who do not want the conflict to end.

He stressed in this regard that any national dialogue should include “parties that have power on the ground, politicians, military and tribal chiefs, and most importantly the leaders of the militias, who have not been engaged in any political process, even though they are the ones who hold the real power.”
