Mahiki back with a bang after £3.5m makeover makeover

The royals’ one-time favourite nightclub Mahiki is to be reborn after a £3.5million facelift.

Mayfair’s Mahiki — visited by Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Rihanna and Rita Ora — closed its doors after 16 years earlier this year.

The beach-themed venue was one of the top London clubs of the 2000s, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge partying alongside Hollywood royalty.

Now nightclub owner Asher Grant, who also owns celebrity hotspot The London Reign in Piccadilly, is opening new venture TABŪ at the site.

Since taking over the venue in summer this year, Mr Grant has completely transformed the 6,000 sq ft site. Now the venue has a Japanese-inspired cocktail lounge and a Tokyo-inspired nightclub.

Grant said: “We couldn’t turn down the opportunity to run a club that could make our careers, even after a terrible 18 months for the nightclub industries.”

But he admitted it was a “scary time” for the industry following months of closures due to Covid.

He continued: “There was trepidation from all parties — myself and my investors. Reign was closed for 491 days and there were points where I was thinking about turning it into an ice cream shop or something.

“But we went for taking on Mahiki and it feels very special to be opening such a huge club after a difficult year.” There will be an entry fee but guests can book a 10-seater table for a minimum spend of £1,500.

TABŪ opens next Thursday.
