AMBERNATH: A man from Delhi, Arvind Kumar (28), has been arrested and his live-in partner, a Nepalese singer called Rabina Badi is wanted for allegedly duping a woman from Ambernath of Rs 8 lakh.
The woman from Ambernath, Kalpana Magar (30), was lured by Badi with the promise of earning Rs 4 crore in exchange for one kidney. The condition that Badi had posed was that the maid would first have to pay up Rs 8 lakh which would make her eligible as a prospective kidney donor.
The maid who lives in Ambernath with her husband, a security guard, and their four children hails from Nepal.
The police said that the maid had met the singer in Nepal and the two became friends on Facebook. An officer said that the 30-year-old maid has some basic eduction and manages to find her way on Facebook and WhatsApp.
Following their meeting in Nepal, when the domestic help relocated to Ambernath in 2020, she found singer Rabina Badi on Facebook and the two chatted occasionally, said the police. During one such chat, the maid had told the singer that her financial situation was bad. The singer told the domestic help that she was now living in Delhi and had earned Rs 4 crore after selling one of her kidneys, the police complaint states. The singer told the domestic help that one could lead a normal life with just one kidney.
"That's how Badi tried to coax Magar by telling her that she too could earn big money by agreeing to sell one of her kidneys, and told that that she would first have to pay a few lakhs and then she would be flown abroad and he kidney would be harvested," said an officer.
To arrange for the amount, the domestic help sold her some land in Nepal, said the police. "She fell prey to the lure of Rs 4 crore and transferred Rs 8 lakh to the account of Arvind Kumar, the singer's live-in partner from Delhi," said the officer.
Subsequently, the singer woman started avoiding phone calls from the domestic help who wanted to know what was happening about the deal. Eventually, Badi even blocked her on Facebook and on WhatsApp. The domestic help visited Nepal and sought help from local politicians, but got no help. A social worker from Ambernath, Bharat Sonar, helped her approach the police.
Senior inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station, Madhukar Bhoge, said a team could go to Nepal to nab Badi.
