THANE: The Thane city police in Maharashtra as well as the traffic department shall deploy heavy bandobast to thwart any nuisance on the New Year eve celebrations.
Sources from police department said that over 5,000 policemen shall be kept on bandobast duty under the jurisdiction of Thane police commissionerate area which includes Bhiwandi, Narpoli, Kalva, Mumbra, Diva, Kalyan Dombivali, Ulhasnagar uptill Ambernath.
A police officer said that the different locations of the city have been identified to keep surveillance on the streets as well as on the offenders and nakabandi will be carried out at various check (entry and exit) points of the city.
Accordingly, the police stations have been asked to keep a watch and maintain law and order.
Balasaheb Patil, DCP, traffic, said, “The traffic department shall erect nakabandi at 54 locations and 36 squads will keep a check on drunk driving at different locations in the city area to catch the offenders."
This year the traffic police shall be concentrating on the arterial lanes as well as the main roads, as many revellers try to flee from the interior lanes which have been already spotted by the traffic department across the city and shall keep switching to nab the revellers under influence of alcohol.
The drive shall start from December 31 and continue till January 1 morning.
“In Thane, we have made ample arrangements to curb drunk driving on December 31,” deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of traffic department, Balasaheb Patil, informed TOI.
Patil added, “Sufficient breath analyzers are already kept ready and other than the major junctions in the city, they will also change their spots and will conduct vigorous drives to catch the offenders.”
