PUNE: The state recorded 85 cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 virus on Wednesday, it's highest single-day tally so far. Of these, 11 were recorded in the Pune district, taking its tally to 54 so far. A total of 99 people have been discharged so far after testing negative for the virus on RT-PCR test.
The state's tally of confirmed Covid-19 cases linked to the Omicron variant has now reached 252, the report issued by the state health department showed.
Of the 85 cases, 47 were reported by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) and 38 by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER). Out of the 47 patients reported by NIV, 43 are international travellers and four are close contacts.
On the NIV's findings of the 47 cases, the report stated that the 34 positive Omicron cases were from Mumbai, while Nagpur and Pimpri Chinchwad reported three cases each. Navi Mumbai and Pune municipal limits reported two cases each, while Panvel, Kolhapur, and Buldhana reported one case each.
The 38 Omicron cases reported by IISER are from the community surveillance. As per preliminary information, they do not have a history of any international travel. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, in a press statement, said all the patients were being treated at the New Bhosari hospital.
