Maharashtra retains top spot among states for most employable talent in 2022: Skills report

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra has retained the top position in the list of states with the most employable talent followed by Uttar Pradesh and Kerala, according to the India Skills Report 2022 which will be released on Thursday.

West Bengal emerged as the fourth most employable concentration of talent. Karnataka, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Haryana made up the remaining top 10 states for youth employability.

Overall youth employability in India has increased to 48.7% compared to last year.

The highest employable age group was identified between 22-25 years of age, with 56.21% of the resources in this age group considered highly employable, according to the report prepared by Wheebox in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry, Association of Indian Universities, United Nations Development Program, All India Council for Technical Education, Additional Skill Acquisition Programme, and PeopleStrong and Taggd.

About three lakh candidates across the country appeared for the test which assessed them on various parameters.

Pune topped the list of cities with the highest employability followed by Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram and Kolkata. New Delhi, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Mumbai and Ahmedabad were the other cities in the to ten list.

Among the employable youth population, 51.44% of females were found to be employable while 45.97% were employable. The results of the test showed that B.Tech and MBA graduates were found to be the most employable.

The demand for qualified and skilled professionals will be driven by sectors such as IT/ITES, pharmaceutical, e-commerce and banking financial services and insurance. The hiring in these sectors is expected to increase by 20% for freshers in 2022 compared to 2021.

Technology as a skill set will continue to be in demand across industries. Compared to the 36% of women participation in the workforce last year, this year has witnessed a similar participation with 32.8% of women employed in the workforce across various industry verticals.

Nearly, 67.2% of men make up the larger portion of employed professionals. Women participation in the workforce is being encouraged by more companies with an intent to hire more female resources in the coming year, the report said.

Gujarat topped the list of states with highest availability of employable B.Arts and MBA graduates in the country. Hubli was identified as the city with the most employable youth capital in the 22-25 age group, at 75.97%, followed by Bangalore which had 67.13% of employable youth in this age bracket.

Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were identified as the top states where maximum hiring activity will occur in the coming year. 75% of all companies surveyed report a skill gap in the industry, while 100% of retail sector employers agree that there is a skill gap to be filled in the coming year.
