As Maharashtra continues to receive heavy rain, two Indian Air Force helicopters have been engaged to rescue people stranded due to floods in Mahagaon taluk of Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday.
Yavatmal has been experiencing waterlogging and floods in the past two days.
Mr. Fadnavis in a tweet said 45 people were stranded due to floods in Anandnagar village of Mahagaon taluk. “Two Indian Air Force helicopters will soon reach Nagpur and from there leave for Mahagaon to rescue the stranded villagers,” he said, adding that Mahagaon taluk recorded 231-mm rainfall.
Collector Amol Yedge said people from affected areas have been moved to safer places and the situation is under control in the city, which has recorded 117.5 mm rainfall since Friday night.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier warned of “heavy to extremely heavy” rain in isolated places in the ghat (hilly) areas of Pune district, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Thane, Konkan, and Palghar on Saturday. “As the monsoon is becoming active and vigorous over Maharashtra, ‘red alert’ is issued for areas of Konkan, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra and a few districts of Vidarbha,” an IMD official had said.
For July 23, IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in isolated places in Mumbai and an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas in Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts.
