Maharashtra: GST collection in May 50% higher than last year

MUMBAI: GST revenue collection in Maharashtra for May 2022 was Rs 20,120 crore, 50% higher than the mop-up for the month last year, which was Rs 13,399 crore.

However, the collection was 26% lower than in April this year, when the figure was Rs 27,495 crore. The collection in May reflects the returns for April, the first month of the financial year. It is always lower than in April, which pertains to the returns for March, the closing of the financial year.

Maharashtra’s GST collections are the highest in the country. The latest figures also show that the GST collection so far this financial year, which amounts to Rs 47,614 crore, is 34. 5% higher than the collection last year.

On the row over GST payment with the Centre, deputy CM Ajit Pawar on Thursday said Maharashtra’s GST compensation dues were Rs 29,647 crore, but the Centre had released just Rs 14,145 crore this week, with Rs 15,502 crore arrears still to be disbursed.

“We have already written to the Centre. We expect that the row over payment will be resolved on top priority. It will help us to allot more funds for developmental work. The state government lost a revenue of Rs 3,500 crore when it reduced taxes on petrol and diesel,’’ the senior NCP leader said.
