Maharashtra: Excess arrival in large quantities leads to sharp decline in potato, brinjal prices

PUNE: The rates of some of the vegetables, which were high in the last few weeks, have reduced by almost 50% in the wholesale markets in the past two days, said Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) officials on Monday.

Vegetables like tomato and brinjal, which were selling in the range of Rs60-Rs80 per kg in the last few weeks, are being sold in the wholesale market in the range of Rs20-Rs55per kg. These rates are much higher in the retail markets (mandis) in various parts of the city, added the officials.

"The main reason behind the drop in the prices is arrival of these vegetables in large quantities from Pune and neighbouring districts. As a result, the prices have become affordable for common citizens," said Dutta Kalamkar, head of the vegetable section at Market Yard, Pune.

The APMC officials did not notice or record a staggering hike in prices of other vegetables, including leafy vegetables, in the last two few days. "The arrival of the vegetables was insufficient in the last two weeks. On Sunday, we received about 100 trucks of vegetables from Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka. As a result, the rates have now come down," said an official from the market yard.

There has been a slight increase in the rates of coriander as compared to last week. A bunch of coriander was sold at Rs2-3 per bunch. Now it is being sold in the range of Rs 3-5 per bunch due to less arrival. However, the prices of fenugreek. spinach and Dill have remained within the range of Rs7to Rs10 in the wholesale markets, said the officials.

The rates of apple, pomegranate, orange, pineapple, grapes, papaya, and sweet lemon have remained stable, said the officials.
