NAVI MUMBAI: A doctor from Pune and another person from Akola drowned at 12.30 pm on Tuesday when a boat with 20 persons onboard capsized in the sea off Tarkarli beach, Malvan, in Sindhudurg district. An adult survivor is currently in serious condition and admitted to a private hospital, while three children are also being treated.
The affected tourists are from Pune, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Kolhapur areas. Locals claimed that those on the ill-fated boat were not wearing the life jackets.
"The boat carrying 20 people had gone for scuba diving off Tarkarli beach. During the return trip, the boat engine encountered a technical problem and became inoperative. Hence, the boat could not be controlled and soon capsized. The lifeguards have rescued all those on the boat, but unfortunately, two drowned to death,” said Rajnikant Patil, port inspector, Maharashtra Maritime Board.
The deceased have been identified are Dr Swapnil Pise (41), a Pune resident; and Aakash Deshmukh (30), a resident of Akola district. The incident took place a day ahead of the annual boating ban.
“The details of the victims are being taken at the hospital,” said an assistant police inspector, inspector.
“All tourists have been found and hence nobody is missing. Seven are being treated in a hospital while 11 others have been discharged after primary treatment,” said Prashant Satpute, district information officer, Sindhudurg.
