MUMBAI: Residents from many parts of Navi Mumbai namely Panvel, Kamothe witnessed mild tremors early on Sunday morning.
IMD officials said that the tremors were owing to an earthquake of 2.9 magnitude hitting the west coast of Maharashtra.
Residents said that the tremors were felt at around 9:50 am owing to which there was slight panic among many residents. “The tremor was felt for barely a few seconds. It felt that some construction work maybe on somewhere around. However later we found that it was earthquake tremors,” said a Kamothe resident.
No major damage were reported anywhere around these areas and neither was any kind of evacuation needed said authorities. Historically there have been several occasions in the central western India when earthquakes of small magnitude have occurred for a long period 3-4 months. Such activity has been categorized as 'earthquake swarm.
