Mahakan: An awful example of renovation

It may take another six decades or longer for the Mahakan Fort -- which has been turned into a new park -- to regain its classic beauty.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has opened the park in what appears to be a rush. Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang is so proud of his work that he posted it on Facebook.

Quite a few pictures featured the structure, which was repainted in glaring, bright "Omo" white, the very colour that is a no-no for any conservationists carrying out heritage renovation. Omo is a detergent brand that has become a slang word used by Thais for something extremely white. But indeed it's a poor choice of colour.
