Maguire's departure from Rabbitohs shows what a tough gig coaching is in 2017

When things go down at an NRL club the usual tactic is to go to ground and avoid the media.

But a fire alarm at the Redfern offices flushed Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly out of his burrow.

Still, he wasn't in the mood for talking.

"We made our press statement yesterday," he said.

"We've got nothing more to say."

The Rabbitohs met with coach Michael Maguire yesterday and the club said it was agreed it was in the best interests of all parties to end his contract.

In that statement, the general manager of football, Shane Richardson, said Maguire helped deliver the drought-breaking 2014 premiership and the club would always be indebted to him.

Today, he had little to add.

"He's done a great job, a great job."

Souths assistant coach Anthony Seibold, who also serves as assistant coach of the Maroons, is set to replace Maguire.

Former Canberra coach David Furner was also in the frame but he was more concerned about his sacked colleague.

"He's not in a good position at the moment," he told reporters as he arrived at the Rabbitohs offices.

As the saying goes: when the team wins, congratulate the players; when the team loses, blame the coach.

Being an NRL coach is a tough gig in 2017 and Michael Maguire isn't alone.

The Wests Tigers sacked Jason Taylor in the first month of the season.

Neil Henry was axed from the Gold Coast with two games remaining.

And there's increasing pressure for the Bulldogs to replace Des Hasler next year.

Former NRL coach Matt Elliott was sacked by the Warriors in 2014.

"It's not like a lot of other CEOs of big organisations where they get the sack and no-one knows about it," Elliott said.

"There's a high level of visibility."
