Collingwood big man Mason Cox has been reprimanded by the AFL for pushing GWS ruck coach Shane Mumford in a bizarre incident before their Opening-Round match.

After apologising on Monday for making contact with Mumford, Cox will have no further action taken against him after the AFL completed their investigation.

"Noting Cox's contrition and the club's commitment in supporting him to be more aware in the future, the AFL has determined to issue a reprimand to Cox and take no further action," the league statement read.

"It is important that all players conduct themselves professionally particularly during breaks and in the periods prior to and following matches."

Collingwood and Cox were forced to explain themselves to the AFL after the incident was captured by cameras.

The Magpies told the AFL the clubs were crossing over as they undertook their centre-bounce drills before the preliminary-final rematch.

The AFL accepted the explanation about Cox asking the umpire to bounce the ball one more time to finish his preparation.

GWS forward Brent Daniels fuelled the fire when he called Cox's behaviour "really bizarre".

"Mason likes to say things that get a bit of a headline," Daniels told the Nine Network on Sunday.

"If you're going to do that you'd want to back it up on the field."

Cox was already public enemy No.1 with the Giants after describing their home venue as "a showground for livestock" when the AFL announced it would be starting the 2024 season with four games in NSW and Queensland.

GWS even set-up a petting zoo at Engie Stadium, formerly Giants Stadium, and named it after Cox.

They had the last laugh when Cox failed to register a disposal in the first half and finished with just five possessions, with the Giants winning by 32 points.
