Magnitude of 5.7 earthquake strikes Istanbul in Turkey

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 has hit the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Witnesses described large tremors as the earthquake hit the city at around 2pm local time, reports the Mirror.

Earlier in the day a smaller quake was recorded close to the city, and on Monday another earthquake of 4.6 magnitude struck.

The natural disaster has caused schools in the area to be evacuated and mobile phone coverage in the area has reportedly gone down.

Photos on social media appear to show that the top section of a minaret at the central mosque in Avcilar has collapsed.

The epicentre of the quake is believed to be about 70 kilometres west of Istanbul in the Marmara Sea, south of the town of Silivri.

Following the latest incident, Laura Grace wrote on Twitter: "Woah. 5.7 earthquake just hit Istanbul and my whole flat rocked like crazy."

And Umar Farooq wrote: "Just felt two very strong shocks from an earthquake in Istanbul. The first one made me concerned, second made me jump, and I took waaay too long to get my things together and get out of the building."
