SAN JOSE, Calif. _ A magnitude 5.9 earthquake rattled the Northern California coast Sunday evening around 8 p.m. Pacific time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake's epicenter was more than a mile deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, about 70 miles southwest of Eureka, the agency reported.
Dozens of residents of Eureka and nearby Arcata submitted online reports to the U.S. Geological Survey that they had felt weak to moderate shaking.
The National Weather Service's U.S. Tsunami Warning System said there was no danger of a tsunami from the temblor, which was centered west of Petrolia, a town about 45 miles south of Eureka.
