Magnificent Shire horses head through Perth as part of fundraising trip for emergency services charties

Perth residents were doing a double take when two magnificent Shire horses made their way through the city.

Jamie Alcock is driving Millie and Willam from his farm in Gloucestershire to Elgin in Morayshire to raise funds for a charity that helped support his brother through more than a decade of round-the-clock nursing care.

And his journey took him through the Fair City this week.

Jamie hopes his Coldcroft Shires Challenge will smash his fundraising target of £15,000 for his chosen charities – Police Care UK and The Fire Fighters Charity.

Police Care UK helped support his brother PC John Alcock, who was an officer with Grampian police, stationed at Elgin in Morayshire.

In 2003 he was involved in a car accident as he was heading to a royal protection shift at Balmoral. He suffered a devastating head injury and never regained consciousness.

Some two years after the accident, John returned home to a hospital room that had been created at his house. He received round-the-clock care from two nurses, with help from a mixture of charities including Police Care UK. Sadly, John passed away in 2017 and was buried with full Police honours at Garmouth, just north of Fochabers.

Jamie said: “As sad as it what happened to my brother was, the real inspiration was the way the police charities and federation responded, not just to what happened to him on the day but afterwards.

"They did a lot to help his partner and young son. He eventually received a big compensation payout, which was eaten up with care, but the charities wouldn’t take a penny back for what they had done."

Police Care UK will receive 75 per cent of what Jamie, who was given a police escort through the city on Wednesday, raises with the rest going to the firefighters charity.
