'Magnificent' 15th-century castle with ties to Robert the Bruce up for sale for £1m

A “MAGNIFICENT” 15th-century castle with links to Robert the Bruce has hit the market for more than £1 million.

Law Castle, a fully restored medieval tower house, which sits at the top of Law Hill in West Kilbride, is described as being steeped in royal history and “architectural significance”.

Commissioned in 1467 as a wedding gift for Princess Mary Stuart, daughter of King James II of Scotland, who was a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce.

The castle was built to mark her marriage to Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran, but the union was short-lived as Boyd was accused of treason and exiled, with the marriage annulled.

The structure then became a law court, complete with a pit prison, hence the name Law Castle.

Despite its turbulent beginnings, Law Castle remained a prominent landmark for centuries before falling into disrepair in the 19th century.

By the early 20th century, the structure was roofless and largely abandoned, but in the late 20th century, an ambitious refurbishment project was launched and was completed in 2005.

The listing states that the restoration has preserved the castle’s authentic period features, including the spiral stone staircase, vaulted chambers, and caphouse lookout, while “seamlessly integrating modern comforts”.

“Law Castle is not just a home, but a living piece of Scottish history-restored with care, alive with character, and offers a rare chance to own one of Scotland’s most iconic homes,” Savills’s listing reads.

Law Castle spans six floors over 3000 square feet, boasting six bedrooms and four bathrooms.

It also includes an entrance hall that leads to the library bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, along with a dungeon dining room with a rear staircase accessing the Great Hall on the first floor.

The second floor is home to two large bedrooms with a Jack and Jill-style ensuite, with the third floor featuring another two bedrooms and a bathroom.

The fourth floor is accessed by the turnpike stone staircase and is home to the master suite, which includes a bedroom, a lounge, a study, and an en-suite bathroom, with a clawfoot rolltop bath.

Savills Property agent Peter Walker said the castle is an “exceptional opportunity to acquire a historic Scottish castle with modern comforts and commanding coastal views”.
