Man admits to growing cannabis in his bedroom 'for Christmas'

A Stockwood man told a court he was growing cannabis for Christmas.

Scott Mereweather, 29, admitted producing cannabis and possessing cannabis and cannabis resin at his home in Dutton Road.

Sian Hunt, prosecuting, said last month police were called to Mereweather’s address and found a tent inside a bedroom containing cannabis plants.

When Mereweather returned he said it was for his personal use for Christmas and he had no intention of selling it.

Tony Miles, defending, said his client had no related matters on his list and had put in an early plea.

He said it involved five plants for personal use and was sought to relieve his client’s anxiety.

Mr Miles said: “He now feels he’s getting his life on the straight and narrow.

“I may be being bold.

“But it may be that a conditional discharge is the best solution in this case.”

Magistrates handed Mereweather a 12 months conditional discharge and told him to make better decisions.

They told him to pay £85 costs and a £21 victim surcharge.

Cannabis recovered from his home was forfeited.
