Magistrate tells mum who crashed car into wall after drinking she 'could have killed someone'

A mum was told off for laughing as a court heard how her first drive ended when crashing a friend's car into a wall.

City magistrates were told that Katie Sansom had been drinking before the incident at 7.26am. After the Renault Clio was damaged, she walked off.

"Are you finding it funny?" asked presiding magistrate Simon Robinson, who went on: "I don't want to see you laughing."

Helen Nicholson, mitigating, told the three magistrates: "Her initial reaction when details were read out was due to her embarrassment rather than disregard for the proceedings and the seriousness of the offences.

"She is very remorseful about the offences and takes this as very much a wake-up call."

Sansom, 23, has no driving licence or insurance. She had been with the friend on March 17 when she took her car.

Miss Nicholson added: "She can't fathom why she made that decision. At the time she had been drinking and was quite heavily intoxicated."

A 22-month driving ban was ordered for Sansom of Cobden Street, Nottingham who admitted driving with 60 micrograms of alcohol in her breath, 25 over the legal limit. She also pleaded guilty to failing to stop after an accident; having no insurance or driving licence.

She was fined £140 with £85 prosecution costs and a £30 government surcharge, all to be taken from her state benefits. If she completes a course on the perils of drink driving, her disqualification will be reduced by 24 weeks.

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, said that police received a report that a car had crashed into a wall and its driver had left. A cabbie pointed to an alley, an officer went down it and spotted Sansom.

"He asked her to stop. She started to run away but after a couple of seconds, walked towards the officer," said Mr Jerath.

Later she could not recall driving and Mr Jerath added: "She said that she had never driven before."

The magistrate told Sansom: "It is totally unacceptable in many ways.

"You could have killed someone. At 7.30am, there are children going to school." As a parent, he said it was important to act responsibly.

Sansom replied: "That is why I am so embarrassed, proper."
