Magistrate refuses bail for murder accused

An Elizabeth magistrate has refused bail for a man accused of a brutal murder in South Australia's Riverland in January.

The 19-year-old man is charged with the murder of Nina Starr at Loxton.

In opposing an application for bail, the prosecutor said witnesses had seen his Toyota Celica speeding away from the scene where police believe Ms Starr was killed before being dumped in the River Murray.

The court heard police found Ms Starr's blood inside the man's car and on the alleged murder weapon - a 44-centimetre spanner - which he had allegedly referred to as his "negotiating stick".

After magistrate Paul Foley refused bail, the man shouted that he was innocent of the murder as he was led back to the cells.
