This book continues Callum’s magical journey at the Magisterium and finding out about himself and the secret that his father has kept away from him. With his two best friends and his chaos-ridden pet, Havoc, they seek to find the meaning behind the letter Callum’s father sent to his teacher, and many more.
After reading the first book, I gathered all my thoughts together to read this book. I knew that I enjoyed the first book, but I was quite anxious about reading the second one because sometimes the second isn’t as good as the first.
The plot of this book was quite interesting and many important things do happen, such as Callum telling his friends something very important. The writing was minimalist, which is something I like in a middle-grade book, because it meant that it isn’t hard to read. Younger children won’t find it particularly hard to read either. I really like the character development that takes place in this book and I love the fact that the two authors aren’t scared to make the characters do certain things. For example, I found Tamara annoying at one point of the book, but in hindsight this was a good thing because it shows that the characters are more realistic.
On the other hand, there weren’t many things that happened in the book – only one significant thing happened. I didn’t like this because I would expect much more to happen in a fantasy book, and expect the plot to be more developed. I also felt there could be more about Magisterium itself. However, as I finished the book I realised that the theme of family and friendship was brought up a lot. They were the main focus of the book.
Overall I do recommend this book. If you’re looking for a Harry Potter alternative then read this book!
