Magical '3D' art exhibit pops up in Tsu

"Masashi Hattori and the Magic World" draws viewers into the world of art through optical illusions. The exhibit opened on April 28 and continues through May 9 at the Tsu-Matsubishi department store in Tsu.

The exhibit features about 30 artworks created by Aichi Prefecture native Masashi Hattori. The art is drawn in the trompe l'oeil style, so a person might appear to be trapped inside a glass box or swimming with goldfish inside a fish tank. Depending on where the person is standing, the art appears three-dimensional.

Since graduating from Tama Art University, Hattori has held various exhibitions both domestically and internationally.

"I want people to take photos with their friends and family and enjoy a magical world that's different from the norm," Hattori said.

The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but it closes at 5 p.m. on the final day of the exhibit. General admission is 700, yen for children age 4 to elementary school-age is 500 yen and free for children 3 and under.
