The Orlando Magic made a minor trade Friday afternoon that will net them extra cash.
Orlando sent swingman Rodney Purvis to Oklahoma City and received big man Dakari Johnson and cash.
The most likely scenario is for the Magic to waive Johnson or see if another team has interest in trading for him.
Purvis and Johnson are under contract for identical $1.38 million salaries for the 2018-19 season. But Purvis' salary is non-guaranteed, while Johnson's contract is fully guaranteed.
The Thunder appear likely to waive Purvis.
So the Thunder will benefit from the trade because they will be able to save the associated luxury-tax payment that would have been produced by Johnson's salary.
Magic officials would not disclose the amount of cash their team received in the trade.
Purvis, 24, spent most of last season with the Magic's G-League affiliate in Lakeland. Injuries to wing players prompted the Magic to sign Purvis to a pair of 10-day contracts in March and then sign him to his current deal.
Purvis played a total of 16 games for Orlando and averaged 6.0 points per game. He made only 25 percent of his 3-point tries.
He struggled in Orlando's five summer league exhibitions this month, and he had no realistic chance of making Orlando's regular-season roster.
Johnson, 22, split time last season with the Thunder and the Thunder's G-League team. In 31 NBA games, he averaged 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.
If the Magic waive Johnson as expected, they will have 14 players on fully guaranteed or partially guaranteed contracts.
