Designer Gavin Verhey Shows Interest in 'Expedition 33'

"Magic: The Gathering" principal designer Gavin Verhey revealed one property he'd love to see enter the MTG universe: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

While he does not make all the game's final decisions, Verhey's influence is strong. He told Dexerto that "Expedition 33" has captured worldwide attention and would be a fun and fitting crossover. At the same time, he tempered fan expectations: there is no indication if or when the game developers may look at such a partnership.

Verhey pointed out the natural synergy between video games and tabletop card games. Already, gamers understand concepts like mana, hit points, and turn-based mechanics, so the crossover transition would be seamless.

Why 'Expedition 33' is a Strong Collaboration Candidate

"Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" has quickly become one of the year's breakout titles. Widespread critical acclaim, including players and industry leaders, has surfaced for the game-even setting a record for the most-nominated game at The Game Awards. Its stylistic depth, gripping narrative, and gameplay variety make it ripe for a Magic crossover.

The connection becomes even more interesting considering "Expedition 33" draws partial inspiration from "Final Fantasy," a franchise "MTG" is already collaborating with.

Given that Final Fantasy–themed Holiday Boxes drop on Dec. 5, tying "Expedition 33" into this crossover momentum feels very natural and timely.
