Magic owe Raptors 2nd-round pick as compensation for hiring Jeff Weltman

The Orlando Magic will send a 2018 second-round draft pick to the Toronto Raptors as compensation for letting Jeff Weltman out of his Raptors contract.

The Magic control two 2018 second-round picks: their own pick and the Los Angeles Lakers' pick. The Lakers owe the pick to the Magic as part of the trade involving Dwight Howard five years ago.

The Magic will send the less favorable of the 2018 second-round picks to the Raptors.

This isn't the first time the Magic have had to compensate another team for a coaching or front-office hire.

The Magic sent second-round picks to the Miami Heat in 2007 and 2008 in exchange for acquiring the rights to coach Stan Van Gundy.

On Monday, the Magic hired Weltman to serve as president of basketball operations. Weltman previously worked as the Raptors' general manager.

The compensation owed by the Magic to the Raptors was reported first by The Vertical.
