LAS VEGAS _ The Orlando Magic are in the midst of finalizing a three-team trade with the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls in which Orlando would receive point guard Jerian Grant from Chicago and center Timofey Mozgov from Charlotte for center Bismack Biyombo, a league source confirmed.
The Magic were looking to add a point guard to their team, and Grant would fit the bill.
Biyombo was signed by Orlando in 2016 but has never met the expectations of his four-year, $68 million contract. Mozgov, another defensive-minded center, signed a similarly overpriced four-year deal in 2016 with the Los Angeles Lakers; Mozgov was traded by the Lakers to the Brooklyn Nets in 2017 and a trade by the Nets to the Hornets was completed on Friday.
Biyombo's and Mozgov's salaries essentially cancel each other out. With this deal, the Magic's intent appears to be to get another point guard. It seems likely that Grant would challenge D.J. Augustin for the starting job or back Augustin up.
The broad framework of the trade was reported first by ESPN, while Grant's involvement was reported by Yahoo! Sports.
