Yoona has a great day in Bangkok

It isn’t easy for female Korean performers to hold solo events in Thailand. The fans and sponsors here generally prefer male performers. But Girls’ Generation singer Im Yoon-ah, better known as Yoona, is an exception. The 3,800 tickets available at ThunderDome, Muang Thong Thani for her latest show on July 7 sold out completely.

When people talk about Yoona, they usually mention her beauty rather than her singing ability. But her solo singles like “When the Wind Blows” and “To You” prove that she’s more than just a pretty face. In fact, not only does she sing the songs beautifully, but she even co-wrote some herself.

The 28-year-old singer and actress will soon be busy with her upcoming movie Exit, which starts filming next month. Before that, the Korean star was in Bangkok to meet her fan club, Sone. On the morning before the fan meeting, S Weekly and other Thai press met Yoona at St. Regis Hotel. Here are some highlights from the interview.

Did you know that tickets to the fan meeting have sold out?

Yoona: Yes. When I first heard about it, I asked staff many times if it was true. It’s amazing. Before the press conference, I saw myself on TV and a caption on the screen said, “Sold out.” I’m very excited.

You usually travel with Girls’ Generation. How does it feel to be here alone?

Yoona: This is my first official solo fan meeting. I’m thrilled. The other members have been very supportive and told me to say hello to the fans for them.

Can you tell us about the song “To You”?

Yoona: This is the first time I wrote lyrics by myself. It’s about how I felt while I was filming the show, Hyori’s Homestay 2. I stayed in a homestay and met many people. It was hard to say goodbye.

Which kind of character would you like to play in the future?

Yoona: My fan club Sone want me to play an arrogant rich girl or a professional, like a doctor. It would be a great opportunity if I got to play a character like that.

You’re famous internationally. What’s the secret to your success?

Yoona: When the band had our 10-year anniversary, I was grateful that everybody still supported us even after a decade. When anybody asks about my success, I always say that it’s because of the love of my fans.

Can you tell us about a happy memory you have?

Yoona: I really liked the time when the group filmed the music video for “Party” in Samui. And another time, we were in Thailand filming a show. We had to stay in a resort for a week. Whenever we talk about Thailand, we think about those times because they’re such great memories.
