Magic Michael Nicholson is Celtic signing of the season and Rangers are now in serious trouble - Hotline

Celtic have been quick off the mark in the January sales and while Hoops fans have yet to see the new Bhoys in action, they reckons new chief exec Michael Nicholson is doing the business.

Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Johnny Kenny have already checked in with Riley McGree expected to be the next to arrive, while loan stars Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers could be secured for the long term.

Nicholson has been working quietly in the background but the new man in charge has impressed with his work so far.

David Bryce, Troon, said: “If Celtic had appointed Michael Nicholson three years ago as CEO we would be miles clear of Rangers.

“Peter Lawwell dragged our club into the doldrums and due to this we are now playing catch up. “His constant penny pinching in the transfer market cost us big time and the recruitment was woeful.

“Nicholson is assertive and gets deals done quickly. How refreshing.”

Gordon Ashley, Ayr , said: “What a strong looking squad Celtic are building now with real attacking flair being bought for every position.

“With players coming back to fitness, including Christopher Jullien, we will easily deal with Rangers after the break.

“Their manager will see none of the £11m brought in as they scrape around the free transfer basket.”

Brian McColligan emailed: “Jorg Albertz said in his Sunday Mail column that selling Paterson makes them financially sound and Rangers could go on to dominate for years to come.

“I’ll have what he’s drinking.”

Rangers fans are not quaking in their boots about the Celtic signings though.

John Bruce , via email, said: “Celtic fans were excited about their unknown manager when he arrived - the same with their three new J-League signings.

But there's one man who won't have been fazed by any of this.

With his record of four league and cup wins in four countries and a Champions League medal, as well as a league title as a manager in his home country, Giovanni van Bronckhorst is obviously a serial winner.”

But Peter Summers, Airdrie, said: “Message for the Rangers board – back Gio or risk it all.”

Record Sport’s Keith Jackson reckons Billy Gilmour would be better off on loan back at Ibrox.

But John Robertson emailed: “Does Keith seriously think that Billy Gilmour would come back to play in Scottish football when he is trying to prove himself in the best league in the world?

“Just have to look at Steven Gerrard so far in the transfer market. Not even looking at going back to Scotland to take players to the Premier League.”

Hotline caller Gordon Ashley poked Killie fans this week but Jim McClean, Rothesay , hit back and said: “Has Celtic fan Gordon run out of things to say about Rangers, so he has now started on my team?

“Is it because Derek McInnes was a bluenose? We are that bad his team only took one point of us not so many moons ago.

“By the way Rangers will win the league again.”

He means the Scottish league, by the way, despite some of the usual talk about the Glasgow clubs going to England.

John Scott, Grassmoor, warned: “Just look at Newcastle. Even Arab riches doesn't get you instant success.

“The Old Firm may be giants in Scotland but one look at league one in England shows how far the mighty could fall. Careful what you wish for.”
