Magic lose heartbreaker to Grizzlies, 95-94

MEMPHIS, Tenn. _ The Orlando Magic will regret their 95-94 loss Thursday night to the Memphis Grizzlies for a long time.

The Magic took an 84-71 lead with 6:12 to play but frittered away that lead after they committed a bunch of senseless turnovers.

Marc Gasol completed the Memphis comeback when he drove to the hoop, drew a foul on Bismack Biyombo and sank the go-ahead free throws with 12.2 seconds to go.

The Magic failed to get a shot off on their ensuing possession, with Elfrid Payton turning the ball over with 0.2 seconds to go.

Memphis ended the game on a 24-10 run.

Evan Fournier finished with 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting and four assists.

Orlando hasn't won a game in Memphis since the 2007-08 season, when the Magic fielded a starting lineup of Carlos Arroyo, Maurice Evans, Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis and Dwight Howard.

The Magic (7-12) should have beaten the Grizzlies (12-8).

For a while, it looked like Orlando would grind out the game.

Memphis only had nine players available.

Mike Conley, Chandler Parsons, Vince Carter, Brandan Wright and James Ennis III did not play because of injuries. Zach Randolph also didn't play because he's on bereavement leave following the death of his mom.

Orlando turned the ball over 18 times, and the Magic's offense disappeared for a long stretch in the second quarter.

Vucevic scored on a finger roll with 9:49 remaining in the period, and the Magic didn't make another basket until Payton stole the ball from Andrew Harrison, sprinted ahead on a fast break and scored on a layup with 3:32 left in the quarter.

That was a six-minute, 16-second gap between baskets for Orlando.

But the Magic were fortunate to be playing an undermanned Memphis team that struggles to score even when its players are healthy. At halftime, Orlando only trailed 50-49.

The Magic had lost four consecutive games _ three of them at home to teams with losing records _ before they defeated the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday in Texas. In order to make progress in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt, they needed to leave with a win.

Tougher games loom the next few days.

The Philadelphia 76ers remain one of the NBA's worst teams, but the Magic will face them tonight on the second night of a back-to-back. Road tests will follow against a pair of clubs that have dominated the Magic recently, the Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards.

Translation: The Magic need to pile up wins whenever they can get them, especially when their opponent has six players out of action.

The Magic started to pull away from the Grizzlies in the third quarter as the pace slowed a bit and the game turned contentious.

Midway through the period, Aaron Gordon argued with a referee when a Grizzlies player drove and appeared to kick Gordon, knocking Gordon over just a few feet from the Magic bench. Biyombo had to push Gordon away from the referee to prevent a technical foul.

A short while later, Gasol fouled Biyombo hard around the neck to prevent a potential dunk by Biyombo. Magic coach Frank Vogel received a technical foul from referee Kevin Scott for advocating for a flagrant foul _ just before a Flagrant-1 foul was called on Gasol.
