When it comes to Steph Curry’s NBA career, there should be absolutely zero doubt that he will wind up in the Hall of Fame.
He’s a two-time MVP, a three-time NBA champion and the only player to make 400 threes in a single season. Curry is the best shooter to ever play the game, and he will be in the Hall of Fame.
So, you can imagine the surprise when Michael Jordan said that Curry wasn’t a Hall of Famer “yet” during an interview with NBC’s Today. Jordan was asked to select his ideal pickup team (Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Scottie Pippen and James Worthy), leaving off both Curry and LeBron James.
It did seem like Jordan meant that Curry isn’t currently in the Hall of Fame, which is true for every active player. But it was an odd comment to make about a player who will undeniably end up in the Hall of Fame when he’s eligible.
Magic Johnson, though, thinks he has found the real reason for the slight at Steph. And Magic would know from experience.
Jordan is the principal owner of Charlotte Hornets, so he’s required to follow the NBA’s anti-tampering guidelines. That includes rules against making public comments about a player on a different team. But I’m not so sure that Jordan was trying to avoid a tampering violation with the remark. He had already called Steph a great player. He went out of his way to throw in the “not a Hall of Famer yet” comment.
It seemed like an attempt at humor more than anything. But hey, Magic does know about tampering fines.
