It appears that we are approaching the final moments of Luke Walton’s days as the Lakers head coach. And as if the cascade of rumors about his apparently imminent firing comes another anecdote of the Lakers dysfunction.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reports that Walton and Lakers President of Basketball Operations Magic Johnson haven’t had a ‘meaningful’ conversation in weeks. Such a revelation isn’t a shock to the NBA community, given how Walton’s job status has been seen in those circles for months now.
Just last week, Lakers owner Jeanie Buss expressed her full faith and confidence in Johnson to lead the basketball operations department. Considering Johnson was not part of the front office that hired Walton back in 2016, it appears a fait accompli that someone else will take the Lakers into Year 2 of the LeBron James era.
